Middlesbrough striker Ashley Fletcher spent the second half of last season on loan at Sunderland.

Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis has praised Ashley Fletcher for getting over his bad spell at Sunderland, as quoted in The Sunderland Echo.

Fletcher spent the second half of last season on loan at Sunderland from Middlesbrough.

The former Manchester United and West Ham United prospect struggled to make an impact at the Black Cats, who got relegated from the Championship to League One at the end of last season.

The 23-year-old striker made 15 starts and one substitute appearance in the Championship for Sunderland last season, scoring two goals and providing two assists in the process, according to WhoScored.

Sunderland fans did not take to Fletcher, and Middlesbrough manager Pulis has praised the former England Under-20 international for getting over his bad spell at the Stadium of Light.

Pulis told The Sunderland Echo about Fletcher: “Fletch had a bad at Sunderland and the crowd gave him some stick so to get over that, that was a bit of character for him. You’d think that would give him that bit of edge. But there is a player in there.”

Middlesbrough struggles

Fletcher has made one start and four substitute appearance in the Championship for Middlesbrough so far this season, according to WhoScored.

The 23-year-old has struggled to make an impact at the Riverside Stadium since his move from West Ham in the summer of 2017 for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £6.5 million.
