Eupen’s prolific teenager Henry Onyekuru may be set for a tug of war between West Brom and the rest of the Premier League.
The fact that 37-year-old centre-back Gareth McAuley (above) is West Brom’s second most prolific player this season means there will have been few eyebrows raised when Baggies boss Tony Pulis confirmed his desire to sign a striker this summer.
As reported by the Birmingham Mail, a new goalscorer is West Brom’s top priority with Salomon Rondon still without a goal since December. Hal Robson-Kanu, meanwhile, is far from prolific with just two to his name thus far.
And Pulis has hardly hid the fact that his summer transfer plans revolve around adding more thrust in the final third.
“More firepower is one of the focuses,” Pulis, whose side are on track for a first ever top half Premier League finish despite a concerning run of form, told the Birmingham Mail.
“We want to try and improve it all over if we can.”
And West Brom may have already identified the ideal target. The Daily Mirror reported on Monday that the duo are set for a summer showdown over the 19-year-old who, after hammering home 15 goals for KAS Eupen, has been dominated for the Belgian league’s Player of the Year award.
The newspaper adds that Celtic had a £1 million bid rejected in January and Eupen are now demanding seven times that amount. Though, with Pulis crying out for more options in attack, it would be a surprise if West Brom decided against the opportunity to sign one of Europe’s most promising young goalscorers.
If Pulis wants firepower, Onyekuru’s remarkable breakthrough season suggests he could be the player to provide it.
