The Championship relegation battlers have given their survival hopes a real shot in the arm.

You can perhaps forgive Blackburn Rovers fans for being underwhelmed by the news that Tony Mowbray had replaced Owen Coyle as manager, but the club have actually made a solid appointment here.

Frankly, anyone would be better than Coyle, who left Blackburn 23rd in the table and with just 11 wins from 37 fixtures in all competitions – a shambolic win ratio of just 29.7% – but Mowbray is somewhat of a coup for a club deep in crisis.

While some may highlight what happened at Coventry City, where Mowbray resigned after 10 matches without a win earlier this season, the problems at Coventry run so much deeper than they do at Blackburn.

Also, Mowbray’s record in the Championship is very good – he’s overseen 217 Championship matches, won 91 of them (41.9%) and has won the title in the past with West Bromwich Albion.

At Middlesbrough as well, Mowbray signed both George Friend and Grant Leadbitter – both of whom remain first team players at the club today, despite their Premier League surroundings.

Blackburn showed in their 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Manchester United that they have quality in their ranks, and with Mowbray at the helm, we could now be seeing that a lot more consistently.
