Blackburn Rovers are 12 points adrift of the top six.
Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray says the club must sign players on level with the current first-teamers if they are going to challenge for the playoffs next season, Lancashire Telegraph report.
“This is practically the team that played in League One for us. They’re doing great and yet I feel if we’re going to be right at the top end of the Championship next season then we need to find some players who are competing with this lot to give us more depth for when the injuries do come along,” Mowbray explained.
Rovers have won their last two games in succession, beating top six challengers Derby County at Ewood Park before heading to Nottingham Forest and coming away with a deserved 2-1 victory.
But prior to this past week, Tony Mowbray’s side had been on a real slump with nine league defeats in 11 games. It was a run which took them from the cusp of the playoffs to lower mid table.
Mowbray’s comments suggests an injury or two to key players such as Darragh Lenihan and Bradley Dack prompted the club’s side down the table, with those coming in not having the same sort of quality.
Blackburn have largely kept the core of the side which played League One football last term, but if they are to move forward they need to bring in players who can reach the required levels on a consistent basis.
Several of this season’s signings such as Ben Brereton, Joe Rothwell, Jacob Davenport and Harry Chapman have been signed for their potential rather than their current ability.
To move forward, Blackburn will need to focus on signing players ready for the top end of the Championship right now, although players of this ilk may come at a cost and will surely be in higher demand.
