Tony Gale’s comments on next season’s budget will encourage West Ham United supporters.

The Hammers have endured a difficult campaign in which they could feasibly go down, despite having finished impressively in seventh last term.

Their move to London’s Olympic Stadium was supposed to kick-start a bright new era, but Gale – who spent a decade on West Ham’s books – believes his old club have not been allowed to flourish this season, due to their owners David Gold and David Sullivan reining in the spending.

Nevertheless, the 57-year-old has high expectations about the 2017-18 campaign.

“They [West Ham] kept their powder dry I think with the money this season, because of going into the stadium and everything, and I think they should have pots of cash to spend come next season,” Gale told Talksport on Friday.

The Hammers have lost five league games in a row for the first time since their last relegation campaign, and have seen hopes of a top-ten finish replaced by fears of the drop.

Slaven Bilic’s side host third-bottom Swansea City this weekend, and will be two points above the relegation places should they lose to the Welsh side.

Despite their slump, Gale continues to back Bilic – another former West Ham player – and called on Gold and Sullivan to get things done quietly behind the scenes.
