Tony Gale has told Sky Sports that he would not be surprised if Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius silences in his critics in the same fashion as Manchester United star David de Gea.

The German stopper has impressed for Liverpool in recent weeks but he endured a number of nightmare performances earlier in the campaign, leading to Jurgen Klopp swapping him for Simon Mignolet.

But the 24-year-old has bounced back in superb style it must be said, and Gale can’t help but draw similarities between the former Mainz keeper and De Gea.

The Spaniard also endured a very rough start to life in the Premier League following his move from Atletico Madrid in 2011, but is now widely recognised as being the finest keeper on the planet.

And the Sky Sports pundit believes that Karius’s stint on Merseyside could take on a similar trajectory over time.

He said: “Let’s give this boy a chance and see if he can do it over a period of time because look at what we said about David De Gea.”

“He got absolutely slaughtered when he came to this country – ‘he’s weak, he’s not got this, he’s not got that’ – let’s give them a chance. The managers have to see it in training and in their personalities and strength of character of whether they think they can do it.”

Spanish outlet Sport have previously reported that Real Madrid will have to pay £130 million to sign De Gea, who has long been linked with a move to the Spanish capital, and time will tell whether Klopp’s boy can command a similar price-tag in the future.
