West Ham United recorded a draw against the Premier League leaders Liverpool on Monday night.
talkSPORT pundit Tony Gale has astonishingly claimed ‘a lot of’ West Ham fans went to watch Liverpool on Monday night and contrary to reports there are normally ‘lots of empty seats’ at the London Stadium.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side recorded a 1-1 draw against the Premier League leaders [BBC Sport], with Sadio Mane and Michail Antonio scoring the goals in the first half for their respective clubs.
There were just under 60,000 supporters in East London to watch the English top-flight encounter, according to BBC Sport.
Nonetheless, former Hammers player Gale had some strong words to say about the club’s fans, who enjoyed a brilliant defensive display from their team.
“They [West Ham fans] were up for it [on Monday],” Gale told the Alan Brazil Show on talkSPORT on 05/02/2019. “There wasn’t a spare seat in the stadium. That made a difference.
“Normally, you get reports there are 60k and there are lots of empty seats. But there wasn’t a spare seat in the stadium. Admittedly, a lot of people come to watch Liverpool. It made for a much better atmosphere.”
In November, West Ham confirmed on their official website that they have taken their first steps in the club reaching its capacity potential of 66,000.
The Irons’ previous hunting ground was Upton Park, but they decided to move away from those long-time surroundings in 2016 to try and move onto bigger and better things.
Nonetheless, in the Premier League, they are currently sitting just outside of the top 10, but they have the chance to go as high as eighth this weekend.
If Pellegrini’s side can claim all three points against Crystal Palace, and other results go their way, then they could potentially leapfrog the likes of Bournemouth, Leicester, Everton and Watford, who are ahead of them in the pecking order.
