Kiko Casilla didn’t have a huge amount to do on his Leeds United debut, but he did pull off one brilliant save.

The former Real Madrid goalkeeper, who joined Leeds on an 18-month contract [The Express], got his United career off to a flier as Marcelo Bielsa’s side beat Rotherham 2-1 at The New York Stadium.

Casilla could do very little about Semi Ajayi’s first-half stunner, and few would have blamed the Spaniard had he been beaten by Will Vaulks in the second half, after Mateusz Klich equalised.

The Rotherham midfielder let fly from some 25 yards with a shot that was sailing into the top corner, but the Leeds new boy pulled off a stunning finger-tip save to deny Vaulks.

The Whites went on to win the game when Klich added his and his team’s second on 86 minutes, but former Elland Road favourite Tony Dorigo suggests that Casilla provided the foundations for that victory.

He told LUTV: “Absolutely [it was key]. They didn’t have too many opportunities, but this was a great strike and what a save that is from Casilla. He gets a touch on to the post and away we go. At 1-1, if we go 2-1 down there it becomes very difficult. That save made such a difference, it really did.”
