Should West Ham United sign Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe in the summer transfer window?

Given that Sunderland have been relegated from the Premier League, it is hard to see Jermain Defoe remain at the Stadium of Light next season.

Sunderland may be a big club and may attract almost 50,000 fans to their home matches, but Defoe is a Premier League player and still has a few more years left in him at the highest level.

The 34-year-old striker has scored 15 goals and provided two assists in the Premier League this season for Sunderland.

Defoe has been the best player for the Black Cats this campaign and has been linked with moves away from Sunderland in the summer transfer window.

According to The Daily Mail, Bournemouth and West Ham United are interested in signing Defoe from Sunderland in the summer transfer window.

The London Evening Standard has quoted Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce as saying that he wants to recruit the 34-year-old in the summer.

Tony Cottee believes that West Ham should bring back Defoe. The striker started his professional club football career at the Hammers before leaving for London rivals Tottenham.

“Personally I would love to see him back at West Ham,” former West Ham striker Cottee said about Defoe on the Premier League Daily show on Sky Sports News HQ on Friday morning (broadcast from 10am, May 5, 2017).

“I know a few Hammers supporters are still upset at the way he left the club back in 2003 when they got relegated.

“I would like to think he was poorly advised by his agent to put in the transfer request he did, but I would love to see Jermain back.”
