Former Everton player Tony Cottee has been telling Sky Sports that he believes striker Romelu Lukaku owes his club at least one more season. With Lukaku stalling on signing a new contract with the Toffees, his future at Goodison Park appears to be in doubt.

It’s no secret that Lukaku desires to play Champions League football, as all top players want to be doing, but with the continued improvements going on at Goodison Park under Ronald Koeman and the new ownership group, former Blues striker Cottee believes Everton should offer Lukaku what he wants.

Speaking to Sky Sports’ Premier League Daily, Cottee said: “I think he owes Everton one more season. I don’t agree that Everton aren’t going in the right direction, they are looking at a brand new stadium.

If they were to beat Liverpool, they are hot on their heels, and have an outside chance still of getting in the Champions League.

Next season they will be pushing more, spending money, and they will have a real charge at it.

I think he should stay for one more season.”

Scoring 21 goals for the Blues this season, Romelu Lukaku is currently the Premier League’s leading goalscorer, and along with Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane, is arguably one of the best strikers in England’s top division. In him, Everton have one of the most exciting young players in Europe, and to see him leave would be gutting for a club who are finally heading in the right direction.

But as the Premier League has shown many times, every player has their price. If Everton can just agree a new deal for the striker, perhaps they can negotiate a price that would result in them being able to invest, and keep on their impress run of improvement.
