Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored just ten goals in 71 Premier League games for The Toffees – will he hold Marco Silva’s side back?
Tony Cottee believes former club Everton need to be more consistent if they are to break into the top six this season but doubts whether Dominic Calvert-Lewin has the quality to take them into the Europe League, speaking to talkSPORT.
Calvert-Lewin has been no stranger to criticism since joining The Toffees in a £1.5 million deal from Sheffield United in the summer of 2016 (Sky Sports).
There’s no doubting the work-rate and commitment of the rangy 22-year-old, who has led the line with pace and power during the Marco Silva era. But with just 10 goals in 71 Premier League games so far, it doesn’t take a genius to work out where Calvert-Lewin’s weaknesses lie.
And Cottee, who was a prolific striker for Everton in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, is worried that Calvert-Lewin’s lack of end product could hold the Merseyside giants back.
“He’s a good player but I don’t know whether he’s going to get the goals to push the club into the top six,” he said, speaking to Alan Brazil on talkSPORT (11 September, 9.30am).
“(Everton) have got to be more consistent, they can beat anyone on their day but they’re not consistent enough. They’ve got to be more consistent then they’ve got a really good chance of kicking on.”
Everton beat Chelsea (2-0), Arsenal (1-0) and Manchester United (4-0) in front of their own supporters during the final few weeks of the 2018/19 season but defeats to the likes of Fulham, Newcastle and Watford proved that there is still a lot of work to be done.
