Former Celtic and Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has suggested in The Times that Middlesbrough should not have signed Adama Traore.

Premier League club Middlesbrough recruited Traore from Championship outfit Aston Villa in the summer transfer window.

Former Villa striker Cascarino has suggested that he cannot understand why Boro signed the 20-year-old former Barcelona winger.

Alvaro Negredo of Middlesbrough

The former Republic of Ireland international, though, has backed Aitor Karanka’s side’s decision to bring in Alvaro Negredo.

Middlesbrough signed former Manchester City striker Negredo on a season-long loan deal from Spanish club Valencia in the summer transfer window.

“I like the signing of Alvaro Negredo but don’t understand that of Adama Traore, who was poor for Aston Villa,” Cascarino wrote in The Times while giving Middlesbrough’s transfer activity in the summer 7 out of 10.

Negredo, who is 31 years of age, has scored one goal and created four chances in three Premier League appearances for Middlesbrough so far this season.

Traore has yet to make his competitive debut for Boro, having joined the former Championship club only on transfer deadline day.

The former Spain Under-19 international winger played 10 times in the Premier League for Villa last season, creating one chance in the process.

Middlesbrough will take on Crystal Palace at the Riverside Stadium in the Premier League this coming Saturday.
