Jonny Evans could have signed for Arsenal in 2018, but the defender ended up at Leicester City, where he is now thriving under Brendan Rodgers.
Tony Cascarino has claimed that Arsenal ‘need’ a player like Jonny Evans, who they were previously touted to sign prior to his move to Leicester City.
When Arsene Wenger was still in charge of Arsenal, his side could have secured the signature of the then-West Brom defender Evans, but the Frenchman opted against bringing the Northern Irishman to the club, as reported by the Metro.
Evans would then go onto make a move to the King Power Stadium later on that summer for a pretty small fee of £4 million [BBC Sport].
Speaking to Weekend Sports Breakfast on TalkSport (26/10/19 at 6:30 am), Cascarino admitted that a player like Evans ‘confuses’ him as he thinks that Arsenal will now rue the chance of not signing him.
“Jonny Evans in another player that confuses me,” Cascarino told TalkSport. “So many people were interested in Jonny Evans. He still only 31.
“Leicester came in for him, for what £3 million, and he defends so well and he’s so good on the ball. We spoke about Arsenal earlier for not getting a deal over the line for Wilf Zaha. They were interested in Jonny Evans and they didn’t take it on board.
“And you sort of feel, they could do with a Jonny Evans now. They signed Pepe for £70 odd million. They signed Aubamayeng for £60 odd million.”
Evans has been thriving in a Leicester City shirt this season as he was part of the Foxes side that remarkably humiliated and thrashed Southampton 9-0 on Friday night.
Despite the sale of Harry Maguire to Manchester United in the summer, Evans has become the more senior figure at the back and has led Brendan Rodgers’ defensive backline brilliantly.
Until Arsenal do sort out their seemingly always leaky defence, any centre-back producing the goods in the Premier League would feel like a good fit for the North London club.
