Former Celtic and Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has written in The Times that newly-signed Nottingham Forest player Nicklas Bendtner was like Manchester United star Zlatan Ibrahimovic when he was 16 years of age.

Bendtner recently joined Championship club Forest on a free transfer. The 28-year-old Denmark international striker has signed a two-year contract with the Reds.

The former Arsenal striker was available on a free transfer after his contract with German club VfL Wolfsburg was terminated in April 2016, as reported by Sky Sports.

Bendtner struggled during his spell at Wolfsburg, scoring just nine goals in 47 appearances, according to Sky Sports.

The Denmark international scored 45 goals for Arsenal in 171 games between 2005 and 2014, according to BBC Sport.

Former Aston Villa striker Cascarino has stated that Bendtner should not think that he is doing Forest a favour by playing for them.

The former Republic of Ireland international has also claimed that the Dane was a phenomenal talent like Ibrahimovic when he was 16.

“Nicklas Bendtner was like Ibrahimovic at 16, a phenomenal talent: those who played against him at that time recall a tall, powerful centre forward who was great in the air and could hold the ball up brilliantly,” Cascarino wrote in The Times.

“But his poor attitude meant he failed to establish himself at Arsenal and now – via Wolfsburg, and loan spells at Birmingham City, Sunderland and Juventus – he finds himself at Nottingham Forest at 28.”

“Bendtner must not think he is doing Forest a favour by going there – he would be doomed with that outlook,” added Cascarino. “He should consider himself lucky to be given a chance and he must take it.”

Forest will return to action on Sunday afternoon when they take on Aston Villa away from home at Villa Park in the Championship.
