Former Aston Villa striker Tony Cascarino has told Talksport that Neil Warnock would be the perfect appointment for Aston Villa.

Warnock, who has been promoted seven times as a manager, took the reins at second bottom Championship side Cardiff City on Wednesday.

The 67-year-old kept Rotherham United afloat against the odds last season and it is for that reason that Cascarino believes he should have been considered.

“You must get a manager in who’s very good at man-management of players,” the Irishman told Talksport. “When Neil Warnock got appointed by Cardiff I straight away thought: that should have been Villa.

“For me, that was a perfect appointment for Villa to get them back. What he achieved at Rotherham last year, and at many clubs in his career was pretty amazing.”

Steve Bruce remains the bookies’ favourite to take the vacant Villa Park post, with Warnock never formally linked, and would also be a good appointment, according to Cascarino.

“Stevie’s done a lot of great things. He is very very good at man-management. It would be another good appointment.

“[But] I personally thought that Warnock was the one they should have got because also, let’s not forget, they’re fighting relegation as we stand today. That would be Neil’s biggest strength and I think he’d manage that group much better than most managers.”

Villa sacked Roberto di Matteo on Monday just four months after the Italian’s appointment, having won just one of their 11 league matches this season.

The Villans, who were relegated from the Premier League for the first time in 29 years last season, currently sit 19th in the standings.

The club will get its first glimpse of what Cascarino claims they have missed when Warnock brings his Bluebirds’ side to Villa Park at the end of November.
