Leeds United were beaten at Elland Road by Norwich City at the weekend and relinquished their grip on first place in the Championship.

Norwich are now ahead of Leeds on goal difference and the promotion race is looking tighter than ever, with the Whites travelling to fifth placed Middlesbrough next.

Winning promotion is going to be tough, and pundit Tony Cascarino has warned this Leeds side are not ready for the Premier League.

Speaking to The Times after Leeds’ 3-1 home loss to Norwich, Cascarino said: “I like the way that Marcelo Bielsa plays but if Leeds United are promoted to the Premier League, they are going to be like Fulham this year — they would be ripped to pieces.

“Bielsa’s game is very adventurous but it comes with risks, as Norwich City showed on Saturday. If you get good footballers on the ball, who can pass it, you are in trouble.

“The style is fantastic — it is great to watch and it puts lesser sides under immense pressure — but, unless they change a few things, Leeds would be smashed to pieces by top teams.”

Leeds have lost four of their last six Championship games and they are clinging onto an automatic promotion spot.

What Cascarino does not take into account is that if Leeds do go up, they will invest and sign better players.

It’s a scenario the Whites hope to have all summer to worry about.
