Tony Cascarino says Leeds United first-team regular not ‘a liability’ anymore

Tony Cascarino has said on talkSPORT (8:53am, April 3, 2021) that Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier has improved as the season has progressed.

The former Aston Villa striker has said that Meslier was a liability at the start of the season, but the 21-year-old goalkeeper has improved over the past several months and has got better.

Cascarino has also said that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will not be looking forward to facing Leeds again, given how hard it was for the Reds against the Whites earlier in the season.

The pundit said on talkSPORT (8:53am, April 3, 2021): “I think the goalkeeper, Meslier, has been as improved as anybody this season.

“He looks a far more accomplished goalkeeper, and he has improved a hell of a lot because the goalkeeper at the start of the season looked a little bit of a liability, but I do think he has got better and better. “

Cascarino added: “I am not sure Jurgen Klopp is looking forward to that game. I think he probably thinks, ‘If we ain’t right and if we don’t match them, we could easily get beaten by this team’.”

Important player for Leeds United

Meslier is only 21 years of age, and the French youngster has been superb for Leeds this season.

True, the youngster has made mistakes from time to time, but errors happen with all footballers.

What is remarkable about Meslier is that he is keeping out former Real Madrid goalkeeper Kiko Casilla out of the team.

According to WhoScored, the 21-year-old has played 29 times in the Premier League so far this season.

Leeds have a gem in Meslier, who could develop into a world-class goalkeeper in the coming years.

New Patrick Bamford contract?

Meanwhile, well-known journalist Phil Hay has written in The Athletic that he expects Leeds to hand star striker Patrick Bamford a new contract.

The Englishman has scored 14 goals and provided six assists in 30 Premier League matches for the Whites so far this season, according to WhoScored.

Hay wrote in The Athletic: “In terms of Bamford, I’d expect Leeds to tie him to a new deal before next season starts. I’d be surprised if that’s a problem.”
