Anthony Martial is facing an uncertain future at Manchester United. Should Tottenham make a move for him in the summer?
Manchester United’s Anthony Martial shoots at goal
Former Chelsea player and now football pundit, Tony Cascarino says that Anthony Martial’s days are numbered at Manchester United.
The 21-year-old French forward joined United last season, and scored 17 goals for the Red Devils in all competitions. However, he has struggled for regular games this season and has been criticised publicly by Jose Mourinho.
Cascarino says that Mourinho has always had problems with his wingers because he demands too much from them.
Mourinho expects his wingers to put in defensive shifts and at the same time offer extra going forward. Cascarino feels Martial is the latest victim, and that the Frenchman’s days are numbered at Old Trafford.
“If there’s one position you don’t want to play under Mourinho, it’s on the wing. Just look at the list of wingers he’s ostracised or demanded too much of over the course of his career: Joe Cole, Arjen Robben, Damien Duff, André Schurrle, Juan Mata — there must be close to 20 names on there,” wrote Cascarino on The Times.
“He expects so much of his wide men: they have to do so much defensively, and offer so much going forward. If you’re a winger under Mourinho, it’s as if your days are numbered, and I think Martial falls into that bracket.”
Should Tottenham make a move for Martial?
Martial is a terrific young player who possess skill, pace, energy and most importantly has this natural ability to produce moments of brilliance.
He is versatile and can play in all the three positions upfront. At 21, he already has Premier League and European experience and has represented his national team at the Euros as well.
Put it simply, he is the right kind of player that Mauricio Pochettino should be targeting to take Spurs to the next level.
Spurs are reportedly keen on Wilfried Zaha, but Martial can offer a lot more.
The Frenchman is reportedly frustrated with the treatment being meted out to him by Mourinho, and could be willing to move in the summer.
Spurs can tempt him with the offer of regular game time and Champions League football – something United cannot guarantee him at the moment.
