Football pundit Tony Cascarino says that Swansea City defender, Alfie Mawson, has developed into a key player for the Welsh club.
The 23-year-old centre-back joined Swansea City last summer on a four-year deal from Barnsley worth around £5 million (The Times). He has since established himself as a fine central defender.
The former Barnsley defender initially found it tough to replace captain Ashley Williams and struggled a bit earlier in the season.
However, Cascarino notes that since the turn of the year, Mawson has become a key player for Swansea.

He notes that while people talk about Fernando Llorente and Gylfi Sigurdsson for their quality, Mawson is as important as them for Swansea’s survival.
Cascarino adds that Maswon is good at reading the game, and has compared him with Hull City’s Harry Maguire. He feels that both these players are good enough to play for teams higher up in the table.
The former Chelsea player believes that if Swansea manage to avoid the drop, Mawson could end up being one of the signings of the season.
“Alfie Mawson has turned his season around brilliantly. It was a tough ask going to Swansea and having to replace captain Ashley Williams and he struggled a little earlier in the season,” notes Cascarino while writing for The Times.
“But since the turn of the year Mawson has become a key man for Swansea. We rightly talk about Fernando Llorente’s goals and Gylfi Sigurdsson has star quality but Mawson is just as important if they are to survive.
“He reads the game well and is good in the air both in defence and attack. Similar to Harry Maguire at Hull City, I think both these young defenders could play for teams higher up the table.
“If Swansea do stay up then Mawson, bought for £5 million from Barnsley, could end up being one of the signings of the season.”
Swansea City have moved out of the relegation zone following their 1-0 victory over Everton in their last game.
