Newcastle United could reportedly appoint Steve Bruce as their next manager, with the new Premier League season edging closer.
Tony Cascarino has admitted that he was ‘amazed’ at Sam Allardyce revealing that he was offered the chance to become Newcastle United manager.
The former Republic of Ireland striker made it clear that Newcastle fans would have ‘hated’ the possible appointment of Allardyce, who previously managed the Magpies over 11 years ago.
After seemingly being offered the job, Allardyce stated that he turned down Mike Ashley’s offer and doesn’t think he may manage in the Premier League again, as he told TalkSport.
Speaking to Weekend Sports Breakfast on TalkSport (13/07/2019 at 9:09 am), Cascarino shared his thoughts on what has been another dramatic week on Tyneside.
“I was surprised that Sam Allardyce talked in midweek about being offered the Newcastle job,” Cascarino told TalkSport. “This is nothing against Sam, but if Mike Ashley would want to have made an appointment the fans hate, that would have been it.
“Whether you think Sam’s a good manager or not. Newcastle fans would have hated that. I was just amazed that would have been considered. Ashley has to come in with a manager that has to appease the fans to some level.
“You need enthusiasm and drive at the start of the season. You can’t go in with a low beat [feeling]. I find it a very strange scenario at Newcastle.”
Tensions in Newcastle, between the supporters and the owner, are already high and the appointment of Allardyce would have just escalated things further.
Ashley and those in the boardroom have made some big mistakes, but they can’t allow that to continue when they appoint the next manager.
As reported by BBC Sport, Newcastle have held talks with Sheffield Wednesday manager Steve Bruce about the vacant role at St James’ Park.
