Popular football pundit Tony Cascarino has showered praise on Tottenham Hotspur right-back Serge Aurier.
The 24-year-old joined Spurs this summer from Paris Saint-Germain for a fee in the region of £23 million, as reported by BBC.
The Ivory Coast defender picked up his first red card on English soil when he was booked (second yellow) for a tackle on Andy Caroll.
Spurs won the match 3-2, but the red card could have been the defining moment of the match, as it allowed West Ham to get back into the game.
According to Cascarino, Aurier has made the best one-on-one tackle of the weekend in the Premier League.
He says that Aurier is “terrific” in last ditch situations, but warns that he can be reckless at times.
The former Chelsea player notes that Aurier plays with intensity and commitment, and it is hard to stop him.
Cascarino believes that Spurs should not try to curb his natural instincts, rather allow him to play freely.
Aurier plays “on the edge”, and Cascarino says that Spurs should allow him make strong challenges; otherwise, they would be “losing a bit of the player”.
“He may have received Tottenham’s first red card in 84 matches, but Serge Aurier made the best one-on-one tackle of the weekend against West Ham United. He is terrific in those last-ditch situations,” said Cascarino to The Times.
“But because he’s so good at them, he can be a bit reckless. Aurier always plays at such a high tempo and intensity, it’s hard to stop him because he’s so committed.
“But if you try to take away the drive that makes him play on the edge, he may become hesitant and then won’t have the same impact. You don’t want the player thinking too much about it — better you let them make the challenges. Otherwise you are losing a bit of the player.”
