Celtic’s magnificent unbeaten run was belittled by the pundit earlier this week.
Tony Cascarino wrote his regular column for the Times today, and offered a bullish response to the heavy criticism that he has received following the disparaging comments he made in relation to the Hoops’ record 63 game unbeaten run.
Celtic have been in sensational form domestically since Brendan Rodgers’ appointment as manager back in the summer of 2016, and recently secured a club record, with their 4-0 win over St Johnstone making it 63 games unbeaten in domestic competition.
Cascarino though, dismissed the Glasgow giants achievements, claiming that they had only managed to go unbeaten for so long because of Rangers’ decline.
He received a huge backlash for his comments, most notably from former Hoops stars Chris Sutton and Neil Lennon, but he struck back today with a vengeance, standing by his original opinion, when writing his regular column for the Times:
“Have they got a very good team now? Yes. But is their achievement brilliant and exceptional? Not in my mind, no. Is it a coincidence that Celtic have done this record at a time when Rangers are nowhere near as competitive? I just don’t think their record stacks up if you look at all the information that’s out there. Neil Lennon is an ex-Celtic player, he said what he said about me. Whatever. I know Neil. Neil and Chris Sutton are the same — they want to say this is an amazing achievement. If it’s that amazing please tell me who’s going to beat Celtic next? Because I can’t see it.”

Whilst it is easy to see where Cascarino is coming from, you can only beat who you play, and Celtic undoubtedly deserve more credit for their achievement than they have been given by the pundit.
Brendan Rodgers’ side return to action next weekend with a trip to Ross County, and will be looking to make it 64 games without defeat domestically.
