Former Chelsea player and now football pundit Tony Cascarino says that Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has a lot to prove this season.
The 25-year-old had made a huge impact for the Gunners when he first arrived in the scene, but recurrent injuries have made him a shadow of the player he once was.
Cascarino notes that at one point of time, Wilshere was tipped to become the next captain of the England national team, but such is his downfall that he now finds himself being discarded by Arsene Wenger.
The football pundit has criticised Wilshere for not being able to grasp the opportunity when he took the field for Arsenal U-23 on Monday night.
He says that it was a perfect opportunity for Wilshere to send a strong message to Wenger. Instead, he picked up a red card for losing his temper against players far less experienced than him.
The former Celtic striker believes that Wilshere can still be a top Premier League player, if he gets his attitude right.
“He has so much to prove now,” writes Cascarino for The Times. “The modern-day midfielder needs to be so athletic – can he compete with the likes of N’Golo Kanté and Nemanja Matic? Can he create and score goals? Can he play 90 minutes regularly? Is he in control of his emotions? Is he free of injuries?
“I hate to write people off because I’ve been there myself. If he is over the injuries and has the right attitude he can still be a top Premier League player. But it’s now or never.”
