Former Celtic and Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has predicted in The Times that Everton will not finish in the top six of the Premier League this season.

Everton ended up seventh in the league table last season with 61 points from 38 matches, eight points behind Manchester United, who finished sixth.

The Merseyside outfit have made a number of signings in the summer transfer window, including forward Wayne Rooney, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and defender Michael Keane.

The Goodison Park faithful will expect Ronald Koeman’s to push for a top-six finish and perhaps even challenge for the Champions League places.

“I don’t see them finishing in the top six,” Cascarino wrote about Everton in The Times.

“In fact, I don’t think they are guaranteed to finish in the top seven. They are vying for those spots from seventh to tenth.

“There are too many good sides out there for there to be guarantees. Look at West Brom — they haven’t got the players that Everton have, but Tony Pulis has got them so well drilled. They look a better team.”

Although it is going to be hard for Everton to break into the top six, they do have the squad capable of doing exactly that.

Arsenal have not made a great start to the season, and the Toffees could take their spot in the top six.

Liverpool are doing well at the moment, but the Merseyside outfit’s Premier League campaign could be affected by their Champions League commitment – Everton could take advantage of this as well.
