Tony Cascarino gives verdict on Jay Rodriguez’s West Brom move

Jay Rodriguez recently left Southampton for West Bromwich Albion in the summer transfer window.

Former Celtic and Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino suggested on the Weekend Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Sunday morning (broadcast from 7am, July 9, 2017) that Jay Rodriguez will not be a success at West Bromwich Albion.

West Brom recently signed the 27-year-old England international forward from Premier League rivals Southampton.

According to The Daily Mail, the Baggies had to pay the Saints a transfer fee of £12 million in order to secure the services of the former Burnley star.

Former Aston Villa and the Republic of Ireland international striker Cascarino has suggested that Rodriguez’s move to Tony Pulis’s West Brom will not work out.

“I think Jay is a really good player, unfortunately I think he is going for the team that I would hate to be the centre-forward more than any is West Brom,” said Cascarino about Rodriguez on the Weekend Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Sunday morning (broadcast from 7am, July 9, 2017).

“Tony Pulis’s West Brom is, as (Salomon) Rondon has as found out and may other centre-forwards, their team set-up is very difficult for you to get goals.

“I think for Jay it’s a real demanding move. I don’t think it will work out for him, and not because he is not a good player. I just don’t think it will suit him.”

Rodriguez is a talented and good forward, but the 27-year-old has had injury problems during his spell at Southampton.

As reported by BBC Sport, the former Burnley man could score only 32 goals in 126 appearances for the Saints.

During the 2016-17 campaign, the Englishman scored five goals and provided two assists in nine Premier League starts for Southampton.
