Kieran Trippier ended his four-year association with Tottenham Hotspur by signing for Atletico Madrid earlier on this week.

Tony Cascarino has claimed that Kieran Trippier will struggle in La Liga after he opted to leave Tottenham Hotspur and join Atletico Madrid earlier this week.

The 28-year-old ended his four-year association with the North London club and moved abroad to Spain’s capital for the first time in his career for a fee in the region of £20 million, according to BBC Sport.

It is a bold step for Trippier, who has seen his form dip in a dramatic fashion for club and country during these past 10 months, as he will be looking to get his career back on track under the stewardship of Diego Simeone.

Speaking to Weekend Sports Breakfast on TalkSport (20/07/2019 at 8:40 am), Cascarino made is clear that he thinks Trippier will find it difficult to perform at Atletico.

“Strange one,” Cascarino told TalkSport. “Kieran has done brilliant for Burnley, exceptional for Spurs and was great for England at the World Cup. This year has been indifferent.

“When you go abroad, as like I have done, it can either way for you. He’ll feel vulnerable in the dressing room, he’ll find it difficult.

“I think he’s going into a club that’s in a bit of a transition with Griezmann leaving the football club. There’s a lot of uncertainty at that club right now. I think he’s going to find it very tough at Madrid. He’s going to be a [transfer] miss. He’s going to have a difficult time.”

It is a bold move by Trippier, but if he gets it right then it could result in him reaping huge rewards. One of those rewards could be him adding to his 17-caps for England.

During Gareth Southgate’s most recent Three Lions squad – their UEFA Nations League semi-finals – Trippier was dropped from his squad altogether.

Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold now holds that number one spot, as strong performances for Atletico could result in him making a return to Southgate’s set-up in the near future.
