One of Tottenham Hotspur or Liverpool will be walking away with the Champions League trophy on June 1.

Referee Dave Gantar chefs the VAR during a match between the New England Revolution and DC United on May 25, 2019, at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Tony Cascarino has stated that the ‘last thing’ he wants to see is VAR decide who will win the Champions League final between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

The Premier League duo, who are managed by Mauricio Pochettino and Jurgen Klopp respectively, will lock horns on June 1 in Madrid for one of the biggest prizes in club football.

This is the first time Tottenham are in the Champions League final, whilst Liverpool will be aiming to win their sixth European crown after falling short last year by losing to Real Madrid.

Speaking on the Weekend Sports Breakfast on TalkSport (25/05/2019 at 7:25 am), Cascarino doesn’t want the VAR to have such a big say in such an important match.

On Tottenham not being fancied to win: “It’s a one-off game,” Cascarino told TalkSport. “The only thing that I hope that doesn’t happen is that this Champions League final is decided by VAR. There is so much riding on this for both clubs, certainly the managers having their first trophies in their cabinet for their particular club. I just hope that doesn’t happen.”

VAR has been used throughout the Champions League this season and it played a significant part in Tottenham beating Manchester City in the quarter-finals.

During Spurs’ second-leg encounter at the Etihad Stadium, Pep Guardiola’s side needed one more goal to progress as Raheem Sterling netted what he thought was a stoppage-time winner.

But VAR ruled out the goal because Sterling’s teammate was judged to be offside as the correct decision was made and the North London outfit went through.

Many will be hoping that if VAR does come into use then the officials on the night do make the right decisions because a lot will be at stake for both clubs.
