Tony Cascarino has stated that he can’t see Celtic’s summer signing Luca Connell playing much for the club next season, as he believes that is an ‘obstacle’ he will have to overcome.

The Scottish Premiership champions signed the highly-rated midfielder from Bolton, who were relegated into the third tier of English football last season.

Despite the mess, both on and off the field, at Bolton, Connell was a rare shining light, as he will be looking to make a name for himself on a much bigger stage now.

Speaking to Weekend Sports Breakfast on TalkSport (30/06/2019 at 7:40 am), former Republic of Ireland international Cascarino admitted that he can’t rate Connell’s signing for Celtic as a hit or a miss, at this moment in time.

“I’m definitely not going to give him a miss,” Cascarino told TalkSport. “He’s an 18-year-old kid, he has played a handful of games for Bolton and he’s got into the Republic of Ireland squad.

“There is a great future there. He’s done relatively very little. A host of clubs were looking at Luca Connell. Premier League clubs. Celtic have managed to pull off a scoop and bring him to the football club.

“I don’t think he will play much next season. I think that’s an obstacle. I think they have bought him for the next two, three, four years time. An 18-year-old, I can’t say a miss and I can’t say a hit because I don’t think he will play.”

There’s no doubt that Celtic are in need of fresh midfield talent and players that can potentially take up the role that will be vacated by someone like Scott Brown in the near future.

Whether the teenager can break into the starting XI, or just earn significant game time next term, remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure, he has the talent to do so.

Added with that, he will be working and training in a very competitive environment and for a team that has dominated the Scottish domestic scene in recent seasons.
