The Everton defence has been poor in recent weeks.
Writing in the Times, Tony Cascarino has criticised Everton’s defence, saying the club’s leaders have gone missing this season.
The Blues boast an experienced back line this year, with Leighton Baines, Seamus Coleman, Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams all seasoned internationals.
Indeed, both Coleman and Williams are captains for the Republic of Ireland and Wales respectively.
They have failed to impress in recent weeks, though, conceding seven goals in their last three games.
Sunday afternoon saw them disappointing once again as Everton conceded within 50 seconds against Southampton; a strike that proved to be the winning goal in the game.
The goal was a poor one to concede and Cascarino was not impressed, saying the leaders in the team have gone missing.
“They have got so much experience, especially in that back four, but they look vulnerable at the moment,” he told the Times.
“Normally you have one or two leaders in the team but they have at least five and I find it really strange that they are so poor. At the moment they are not playing like a group of captains.
“Something is not right about the defence and Ronald Koeman has a job to do in fixing it if Everton are to fulfil their potential this season.”
It is now up to Koeman to try to improve his defence and turn around Everton’s alarming form.
They had started the season strongly but recently have reverted back to the side that was so poor under Roberto Martinez for the last two seasons.
If they do not show signs of improvement, it is likely that key additions will be quickly sought out in the January transfer window.
