Tottenham lost at the weekend to end the month on a disappointing note.
Tottenham Hotspur slipped to defeat against Wolves at Wembley, failing to capitalise on their recent strong form.
Spurs had scored 11 goals in two matches before losing 3-1 to the newly promoted side.
Prior to the game, Spurs had been talked up as potential title challengers after Manchester City’s recent slip ups.
Pundit Tony Cascarino told The Times he believes Tottenham’s defence is simply not good enough to mount a title challenge.
He said: “It was similar to how Juventus beat Spurs at Wembley in the blink of an eye in March, scoring twice in the space of four minutes, and Inter Milan did similar at the San Siro in September.
“There’s no questioning that Tottenham are a very good side but their defence is not good enough to sustain a title challenge and Hugo Lloris was again at fault for Wolves’s first and second goals.”
Tottenham’s defence has long been the cornerstone of Mauricio Pochettino’s success at Tottenham.
This season they have conceded 21 goals. Liverpool by comparison have only allowed eight. Chelsea and Manchester City have allowed 16 each.
Spurs have conceded the fourth fewest in the league, but still short of their rivals and only just bettering Wolves and Leicester on 23 goals each allowed.
If Tottenham are to reach the next level and win the title, then there is a legitimate case that their defence needs to take a leap and become even meaner, whether that means changing goalkeeper, or defensive personnel.
