Tony Cascarino has written in The Times that Southampton striker Shane Long is the biggest enigma in football.

The former Republic of Ireland international striker made the comments about Long following his goal for Southampton against Liverpool last weekend.

The 32-year-old Republic of Ireland international forward found the net for the Saints in the ninth minute of the Premier League game at St. Mary’s Stadium on Friday evening.

Cascarino wrote about Long in The Times: “That was only Shane Long’s fourth goal in his past 69 appearances for Southampton, which is quite astonishing when you think what a talented striker he is. He is the biggest enigma in football.

“As a former Ireland forward, I have watched his career closely and he certainly has far more ability than Robbie Keane, Ireland’s record goalscorer — he is much quicker, better technically and is superior in the air, but he could never finish.

“He has played in the Premier League for nearly a decade and has moved between clubs for big transfer fees so it’s hard to understand how his goal tally is so poor.”

Not a good finisher?

Long has been playing in the Premier League for a while now, but his poor record in front of goal suggests that he is simply not a very good striker.

True, the former West Bromwich Albion and Hull City forward is quick and works hard, but at the end of the day, strikers are meant to score goals, and Long simply does not do that.

The 32-year-old has made eight starts and 12 substitute appearances in the Premier League for Southampton so far this season, scoring two goals and providing one assist in the process, according to WhoScored.
