Tony Cascarino has backed Andre Gomes to pick up where he left off after he completed a permanent transfer to Everton this summer.

As reported by BBC Sport, the 25-year-old made a £22 million switch from Barcelona to Everton and penned a five-year contract at Goodison Park.

Gomes was on a season-long loan at Everton last season and his performances clearly impressed those on Merseyside as they pushed through a permanent transfer for the midfielder.

Speaking to Weekend Sports Breakfast on TalkSport (30/06/2019 at 7:40 am), former Republic of Ireland international, Cascarino applauded Gomes for doing ‘all the ugly stuff’ in the middle of the park, as he backed him to have a successful campaign next term.

“He’s proven already,” Cascarino told TalkSport. “You are signing a player that done very well for you last season. So, why would he be any different? Everton fans like what they saw. Fans were giving him a great ovation when he came off the pitch.

“Very good at getting the ball and moving it on. Doing all the ugly stuff in midfield. He’s a real complete midfielder. With Idrissa Gueye in there also, I thought last season their midfield looked a lot more solid. I can’t see him doing any less than what he did last season.”

There was some interest in Gomes’ services from elsewhere as Everton will be pretty pleased that they signed the much-sought-after player.

He formed a solid partnership with the defensive-minded Idrissa Gueye last term, with the more attack-minded Gylfi Sigurdsson making the ball talk in the attacking third.

Everton’s job will be to now add more quality and depth to their midfield because they will need strength in depth if they are to finish in the European places.
