Everton have picked up four points from their opening three Premier League matches.
Tony Cascarino has claimed that the career of Theo Walcott has ‘really stagnated’ after he produced a poor showing during Everton’s 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa on Friday night.
The 30-year-old came on as a late substitute for the Toffees, and with the scoreline still reading 1-0 to the hosts, Walcott missed a great chance from five yards out as his effort went over the bar.
All Walcott had to do was hit the target and he would have equalised for his team, who left the Midlands with zero points to their name.
Speaking to Weekend Sports Breakfast on TalkSport (24/08/2019 at 6:15 am), former Aston Villa striker Cascarino claimed that Walcott’s career has gone backwards.
“I was disappointed with Walcott coming on,” Cascarino told TalkSport. “He had such a good chance [to score]. Theo’s just really stagnated in his career as a player. He can be so dangerous.
“It wasn’t that long ago he got 20 goals for Arsenal. It’s a real tough one with Theo because there is so much quality there. His pace is devastating. At times he has shown he can be a real brilliant finisher. He can be caught between the storm of being a wideman and a centre-forward, it hasn’t served him well.
“I’m not sure the latter years of Arsene Wenger did him any good. I think he needed coaching. You’re a teenager then you are in your mid 20’s. Then you might need a manager that’s going to give you a bit of a different dynamic to your game. Theo hasn’t had that.”
A lot was expected of Walcott during his younger days as it is fair to say that the Southampton academy product hasn’t perhaps fulfilled his talents.
He joined Arsenal as a teenager, and despite winning numerous FA Cups, he didn’t really produce what was expected of him as he left the club in 2018 to join Everton for £20 million [BBC Sport].
Walcott’s faltering career has also resulted in him completely losing his England place as he hasn’t represented his country for a number of years now.
