Tony Cascarino claims that Newcastle United signing Salomon Rondon has been one of the best ‘pound for pound’ signings this season

West Bromwich Albion loanee Salomon Rondon helped Newcastle United recorded a score draw against Bournemouth over the weekend.

Tony Cascarino has made a huge claim that Newcastle United striker Salomon Rondon, ‘pound for pound’, has been one of the best signings of the season.

The 29-year-old moved to St James’ Park on loan from relegated West Brom last summer and he has become a firm fan favourite for the manner in which he has led the line for Rafa Benitez’s side.

On Saturday, he scored a stunning free-kick during his side’s 2-2 draw at Bournemouth, with three goals in his last five Premier League games helping Newcastle record a very respectable 10 points.

Speaking to Weekend Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT (17/03/2019 8:40 am), Cascarino made a number of huge claims about Rondon, including that he is an upgrade on Aleksandar Mitrovic.

“Pound for pound, if you were to say who was the best transfer, not obviously the biggest transfer, but one of the best, Salomon Rondon has been absolutely brilliant for Newcastle,” Cascarino told talkSPORT.

“He has got 12 goals for them this season. He’s on loan. He’s a lone striker. What he’s given to Newcastle. he gives you a bit of everything. He gives you free-kicks, he gives you headers, he’ll give you powerful outbattling [duels]. He leads the line fantastically.

“And Newcastle fans will be probably a bit frustrated that Mitrovic left the club because they did like him. But I tell you what Rondon is an upgrade for them.”

Over the course of the season, Rondon has scored nine Premier League goals for his team, including providing his teammates with five assists [transfermarkt].

There is no doubt that Rondon’s goal tally doesn’t signify how important he has been to Newcastle because he has been the definition of a team player.

He is set to return to the Hawthorns when his loan deal expires in the summer, with Albion currently sitting in the play-off places in the Championship and hoping to earn promotion this season.

However, there is no doubt that the Toon Army faithful will want him to stay at the club because he has played a big part in all the good that has come out of St James’ Park this term.
