Tony Cascarino told the Weekend Sports Breakfast (20/09/20 at 6:15 am) that Leeds United’s Patrick Bamford has been an ‘odd’ performer at every level he has played at.

Questions surrounding whether Bamford can be a consistent goalscorer is something which has weighed on his shoulders ever since his days in the Championship.

But despite being criticised for missing a number of big-game chances for Leeds last season, Bamford has netted in back-to-back Premier League matches.

Cascarino talked about Bamford’s qualities and how he’s not seemingly rated by others, as he also labelled Leeds ‘a really strange club’.

“People within the game, a lot of them have talked about Bamford by saying he’s not good enough,” Cascarino told talkSPORT. “I saw him at MK Dons when he was a young lad, on loan from Chelsea and he scored two at Gillingham.

“I thought there is something odd about Bamford because he’s not the quickest. But he keeps on getting into positions to score goals and he’s a good finisher. He has sort of done it at every level that he’s gone up to.

“Is he good enough? I certainly think he’s a finisher good enough. I always thought pace might be a [problem] but then he makes the goal for the fourth goal when he outruns Odoi and squares it like a winger.

“Look, Leeds is a really strange club. If you can get yourself in an incredible physical condition the Leeds players are then you can overachieve, which they are doing.”

It isn’t a surprise that Bamford has started life in England’s top-flight in such a positive fashion because the pressure has been eased off his shoulders.

In the Championship, every game Leeds were expected to win and every little stumble from the Yorkshire giants was met with panic because of what was at stake.

But they are now back where they belong, can play with more freedom and that is seemingly bringing more out of Bamford, who has been clinical in front of goal so far.
