Everton have reportedly joined Arsenal in the race for Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha.
Tony Cascarino has suggested that Everton could potentially use James McCarthy in order to secure the signature of Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha.
The London Evening Standard recently claimed that Everton are set to rival Arsenal for Zaha’s signature this summer, with the versatile attacker keen to leave Selhurst Park.
Added with that, the Daily Mail have claimed that Everton’s forgotten man James McCarthy is the subject of an £8 million bid from Palace.
Speaking to Weekend Sports Breakfast on TalkSport (20/07/2019 at 8:45 am), Cascarino suggested that Everton could potentially use Palace’s interest in McCarthy to try and lure Zaha to Goodison Park, but he can only see him heading to one club this summer.
“He has only suggested that he wants to go to Arsenal which is a strange one, especially for a player to do,” Cascarino told TalkSport. “Whether Everton want to break their transfer record and spend as much as they would want on Zaha, I don’t know.
“But James McCarthy has been linked with Palace. Maybe they can make way with some money with some players. I think he’s got his headset on Arsenal. I would like to think Arsenal would come back with a more realistic deal to get Wilf Zaha to their club.”
It would be some coup by Everton if they could secure the signature of Zaha’s this summer, but given his ambitions that deal is looking unlikely.
Zaha wants to test himself in Europe, and at this moment in time, Marco Silva’s side are trying to reach that level, but Arsenal are in the Europa League.
Given the Gunners current problems, and Everton’s ambitions to build on their top-eight finish from last season, it won’t be a surprise if the Toffees do finish above the London club next season.
