The midfield talent has emerged as a real star of the future for Tottenham Hotspur.
Millwall’s Jed Wallace in action with Tottenham’s Harry Winks
Former Millwall striker Tony Cascarino was an interested observer when his former club took on Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup this weekend.
Millwall were of course thrashed in the game 6-0, with plenty of Spurs players impressing in the fixture.
But midfielder Harry Winks was particularly impressive. The 20-year-old has something of a revelation this season and he put in another good display as Spurs run rampant.
It certainly impressed Cascarino.
He even feels the player is a better midfielder than his team-mate Eric Dier, telling The Times:
“I think Winks is a better footballer than Eric Dier, the central midfielder who has been shifted into a three-man defence by Mauricio Pochettino in recent months, and he has something of Cesc Fàbregas and Michael Carrick about him. He is so gifted and has that adventurousness about his game.”
The England international has recently dropped into a defensive trio for Mauricio Pochettino and Winks is therefore more likely to get midfield opportunities for Spurs.
But Cascarino believes Winks has more of a shot playing for England than he does of getting into the Tottenham midfield:
“I honestly think it might be harder for him to get a starting place in the Tottenham first-team than the England one because of the strength that they have in that position. I look at England’s midfield and I don’t think “wow” like I do when I look at Spurs.
England’s Eric Dier celebrates after scoring their first goal
“But there are two fairly large obstacles in his way at White Hart Lane in the forms of Mousa Dembélé and Victor Wanyama. Those two physically dominate the midfield for Tottenham in a way that Winks cannot, but he offers more in a creative sense than they do, which is why I think there can be a place for him in that first team.”
Winks is certainly looking like an excellent talent for Spurs going forward and the club will know they have a definite talent on their hands.
He is still young and there will be times his creativity will be called upon from Pochettino. Hopefully he can continue to develop at Spurs this season.
