Well-known Everton fan Tony Bellew has ridiculed those who claimed Wayne Rooney was past his best on Twitter as the former England captain scored his ninth Premier League goal of the season on Wednesday night.
The 32-year-old rejoined Everton in the summer with pundits and fans alike claiming that he was no longer the player that inspired Manchester United to five Premier League victories.
However, Rooney continued his excellent goalscoring form with a ninth league strike of the season to beat Newcastle United 1-0 at St. James’ Park, showing a predatory instinct to prod the ball home from close range.
Champion boxer Bellew replied to a stat on Twitter that claimed Rooney has a 36 per cent conversion rate, higher than the likes of Harry Kane, Romelu Lukaku, Lionel Messi and Mauro Icardi, stating sarcastically “he’s coming to us for his pension.”
Everton earned their third win in four Premier League outings against the struggling Toon, as Sam Allardyce continues his excellent start as Goodison Park manager with wins against Huddersfield Town, West Ham United and Newcastle.
Now, Allardyce will be hoping Rooney can continue his magnificent strike rate against Swansea City on Monday night in a match that the Toffees will be expected to win as Gylfi Sigurdsson and Ashley Williams go up against their former side.
