Tony Adams says Liverpool have a player on their books who is genuinely ‘world-class’

Speaking on the Seaman Says Podcast, Tony Adams has been full of praise for Liverpool defender Andy Robertson.

Adams was previewing England vs Scotland, and he told a story about how he was asked to pick a combined XI over the last 25 years, but he couldn’t fit a single Scotland player in there.

However, Adams said that if current players were allowed, he’d have picked Robertson, who he believes to be world class.

Adams called Robertson world-class on the podcast, claiming that he’s the best left-back Scotland or England have produced in the last 25 years.

“’I had to do a combined XI for Snickers who are sponsoring both Scotland and England, and I needed to do a combined XI from the last 25 years, and I thought I have no Scottish players to put in here,” Adams said.

“I didn’t have any single Scottish player in my starting XI, and I couldn’t use current players because I would have gone for Andy Robertson who I think is world-class. It was from 1996 onwards and I knew the goalie was my mate, so I hope you don’t mind David, but I went for Andy Goram.”

Better than Ashley Cole?

We don’t disagree with Adams calling Robertson world-class, but would he get into this hypothetical combined XI ahead of Ashley Cole?

It’s a very close call, but in our view, the Liverpool man hasn’t quite eclipsed the Chelsea legend as of yet.

Now, that isn’t a knock on Robertson, the fact that he’s even being spoken about in such esteemed company is a massive compliment, but Cole is one of the greatest of all time in that position.

Maybe in a few years, this will be an argument that is revisited, and a great performance against England on Friday could turn the tide in Robertson’s favour.
