Toni Nadal explains how he would start with Iga Swiatek if he were her coach

Iga Swiatek appointed Francisco Roig as her new coach following her split with Wim Fissette at the Miami Open.

Roig, who previously worked with Rafael Nadal and had a brief spell coaching Emma Raducanu from 2025 to 2026, brings plenty of experience to the role.

Boris Becker has backed the move, and Swiatek will now be hoping Roig can help her recapture the form that once took her to world number one and six Grand Slam titles.

Toni Nadal, who spent many years working alongside Roig, weighed in on the appointment and also offered some thoughts on how he would approach coaching Swiatek if given the opportunity.

During an interview with Polish outlet TVP Sport, Nadal commented: “Francisco Roig is a very good coach. He spent many years with Rafael. He’s incredibly friendly. When it comes to tennis, he knows a lot about technical skills and how to develop them.

“He also understands that the most important thing is never to make changes that your mind can’t imagine.”

Nadal went on to outline what his first step would be if he were coaching Swiatek and trying to help her rediscover her form.

He said: “If I were Iga’s coach, I’d tell her we need to see how fast she hit the ball when she was number one. We’d assess whether she should hit it faster or slower now.

“Through her own example—understanding how it was when she was winning and how it is now, when she’s lacking victories—she’d see what to change and how to do it.

“I’d also try to build her confidence,” Nadal added. “Without that, she won’t become number one again.”

Roig and Nadal spent a lot of time together, so it was only natural that TVP Sport asked whether the Spanish coach would do well with Swiatek.

Nadal didn’t offer a definitive answer but was complimentary about Roig’s coaching qualities.

He said: “I can’t describe him in one word, so I’ll put it this way: he’s a good man, a demanding coach, and a trainer with a good understanding of technique. Fill in the blanks for yourselves.”

Since parting ways with Nadal, Roig has worked with Matteo Berrettini, Raducanu, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, and now Swiatek.
