West Ham talent was in action as under-23 side lost.

David Moyes, Manager of Sunderland gives his team instructions during the Premier League match between Arsenal and Sunderland at Emirates Stadium on May 16, 2017 in London, England.

West Ham fans have pleaded ever since David Moyes took over that Toni Martinez would be in his first squad.

The talented young striker has been prolific for the under-23 team but was never given a chance in the Premier League under Slaven Bilic.

On Friday evening Martinez was handed a start in West Ham’s under-23 match against Derby County at the London Stadium, with David Moyes watching on.

It did not go well.

West Ham were beaten 5-1 by the visitors, and Martinez played all 90 minutes but did not get on the scoresheet.

The young Hammers were without injured winger Nathan Holland, but the scale of the defeat was still a big surprise.

If Martinez had scored and inspired West Ham to a win, it would have been hard for David Moyes to resist fan pressure to include him in Sunday’s squad for the visit to Watford.

Unfortunately for the young Spaniard he failed to capture some of this momentum, and his goalless show has given Moyes reason to suggest he is still not ready.
