Michael O’Halloran desperately needs a change of scene after falling out of favour at Rangers – and St Johnstone could be the ideal destination.

Rangers' Michael O'Halloran shoots

Michael O’Halloran was already struggling for opportunities at Rangers before a misunderstanding meant he failed to turn up for a reserve clash against Hearts last month, as reported by the Scottish Sun.

As a result, the winger, who has only started six Scottish Premiership games all season, appears to have no future at the Ibrox club under the infamously disciplinarian regime of Pedro Caixinha.

Especially when the Scottish Sun added that O’Halloran had been forced to train with the reserves after the incident. Though the 26-year-old would clearly be an excellent addition for most other sides in the Scottish top flight, with the newspaper adding that Rangers received a number of approaches to take him on loan in January.

Wright thing to do

Therefore, it’s no surprise that St Johnstone coach Tommy Wright would jump at the chance to bring O’Halloran back to McDiarmid Park a year-and-a-half after he left for Ibrox.

“I don’t think Michael’s available for loan. If he was, that would be a player I would urge the chairman to go and try and sign for us, but Michael is under contract at Rangers,” Wright, who was tipped to replace Mark Warburton before Caixinha’s appointment in March, told Herald Scotland.

“If there is going to be speculation about his future at Rangers, it’s easy to see we would be a club that would be suited for him but there’s been nothing formal.”

O’Halloran developed into one of the most exciting attackers in Scotland during his time with the Perth-based club, piquing Rangers’ interest after his superb individual performance put them to the sword in a 3-1 League Cup defeat in 2015.

Therefore, with O’Halloran out of the picture at Ibrox, a return to his former club could be the ideal solution for all parties.
