Darlington manager Tommy Wright has suggested to The Northern Echo that he wants to extend the loan spell of Sunderland-owned striker Andrew Nelson.

Nelson joined National League North outfit Darlington on loan from League One club Sunderland on December 13.

According to The Northern Echo, the 21-year-old striker has scored four goals in his first three games for The Quakers.

Darlington manager Wright has suggested that he wants to extend the loan spell of the youngster at Blackwell Meadows, and that he will speak to Sunderland manager Jack Ross.

Wright told The Northern Echo regarding Nelson: “Sunderland will want him to play as high as he possibly can. As a player, you want to be playing every week and you want to score goals – he is doing that here.

“He’s adored by the fans because he has made a really positive start to his time here, and he will have a decision to make. Sunderland would be happy for him to stay, but it’s going to come down to what other offers he gets.

“He’s got to weigh it all up and I will be talking to him, Kevin Ball and probably Jack Ross too.”

Darlington stay

Nelson is doing well for Darlington at the moment and is gaining valuable experience at the National League level.

It does make sense for the 21-year-old to carry on playing for Darlo for a while, although if there is an offer from a club in League Two, then both the striker and Sunderland should at least consider it.

After all, playing for a club in League Two is going to be a step up from playing for Darlington.
