Tommy Wright claims St. Johnstone attempted to sign a Rangers player on Monday.

St. Johnstone manager Tommy Wright has told The Scottish Sun that he failed in a move to sign an unnamed Rangers player on deadline day.

Wright suffered a major blow on deadline day, as forward Michael O’Halloran left the club in order to drop down to the Championship and join Rangers.

It means Wright’s men have lost another vital forward, just 18 months after seeing Stevie May leave the club for Sheffield Wednesday, and replacing goalscorers isn’t an easy task.

Wright is finding that out, as he claims that two deals fell through on transfer deadline day, leaving fans a little frustrated that some of the money they received for O’Halloran wasn’t spent on reinforcements.

Wright has told The Scottish Sun that he tried to sign Sheffield United’s Scottish playmaker Stefan Scougall in a bid to boost his squad, whilst also claims that a move for an unnamed Rangers player also collapsed after O’Halloran had moved to Ibrox – and admits the club could have sold O’Halloran sooner, in order to bring in a replacement.

“Probably it would have been better for us if it had been done earlier, but for various reasons that wasn’t the case,” said Wright. “We had things that broke down at the last minute. We enquired about Scougall and there was a deal for a Rangers player that fell through. But if anybody was expecting us to splash the cash and spend a huge portion of Michael’s money, that was never going to happen,” he added.

Intriguingly, STV reported on deadline day that talks over a potential part-exchange deal involving Rangers midfielder Nicky Law for O’Halloran fell through, and he could be the player Wright is talking about having been a bit-part player under Mark Warburton this season.

Now, St. Johnstone have to make it through to the end of the season, where Wright will then be hoping to spend the O’Halloran cash in the summer transfer window.
