Nuno’s Tottenham Hotspur decided not to sign Takehiro Tomiyasu in the summer transfer window because of Japhet Tanganga and the defender eventually joined Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, according to The Athletic.

What’s the story?

The Athletic have reported that Tottenham wanted to sign Tomiyasu from Bologna in the summer transfer window.

Spurs reportedly tracked the Japan international right-back ‘intensely from the outset of the transfer window’.

However, the performances of Tanganga at the start of the season saw Spurs decide against signing a defensive right-back.

So, Tottenham opted to bring Brazil international Emerson Royal, 22, from Barcelona.

As for Arsenal, the North London outfit swooped in to sign Tomiyasu from Bologna, with manager Arteta subsequently telling the club’s official website that he is “a strong defender” with “great defensive qualities, high technical ability and composure on the ball”.

Good decision from Tottenham Hotspur?

Only time will see if Tottenham made the right decision.

At the moment, it does seem that Spurs head coach Nuno has good options at right-back.

Tanganga is a very good defender who is only 22.

Emerson, also just 22, has come from Barcelona, and you do not get signed by the Spanish giants if you are not a good player.

Then there is also Matt Doherty, who can play as a right wing-back as well and worked under Nuno at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
