Tom Werner thinks Philippe Coutinho regrets Liverpool exit

Philippe Coutinho left Liverpool for Barcelona in January 2018.

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has suggested to The Liverpool Echo that Philippe Coutinho regrets leaving the Reds for Barcelona.

Coutinho joined Liverpool from Inter Milan in January 2013 and became a very important player for the Reds.

The Brazil international attacking midfielder was very popular among the Anfield faithful and established himself as one of the best players in the world during his time at the Merseyside outfit.

The 26-year-old, who can also operate as a winger, left Liverpool for Spanish and European giants Barcelona in January 2018 for an initial transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £105 million.

Much was expected of the Brazilian when he arrived at Camp Nou, but the former Inter man has failed to be a massive success at Barcelona and is not playing at the level he did when he was at Liverpool.

Liverpool are not missing Coutinho, as since his departure, Jurgen Klopp’s side reached the final of the Europa League in 2016, progressed to the Champions League final last season and won the competition this campaign.

Werner told The Liverpool Echo about Coutinho: “I would just point to the story of Philippe Coutinho. I have only good things to say about Philippe. But I think he left Liverpool because he wanted to play for one of the two big Spanish clubs.

“We tried to convince him that we had the club moving in the right direction and that he could experience big Champions League occasions by staying at Liverpool. I think he probably regrets his decision.”
