Tom Rogic’s international teammate Jackson Irvine has suggested that the midfielder should be content staying at Celtic for a number of years, insisting that there is no shame enjoying a prolonged spell at Parkhead, the Evening Times reports.

Rogic has been one of Celtic’s most impressive players over the last couple of years and clearly has the potential to be the side’s talisman in the near future.

He cemented his name in Hoops folklore by scoring the treble-clinching goal when he found the back of the net in stoppage-time to settle the Scottish Cup final, seemingly prompting some to suggest that he may follow the number of key players who have decided to move away from the Bhoys in an attempt to further their careers in recent years.

But Irvine – who spent around five years with Celtic – has sent a clear message to his Australia teammate that there is no shame in staying with the Hoops for a long time, pointing out the status that Henrik Larsson enjoys after a career that involved a seven season spell in the Scottish Premiership.

“I am sure Tom has big ambitions for himself as Australian football has for him, but I’d like to see the level he’s at now get paid a little bit more respect than it currently does,” he said, as reported by the Evening Times.

“You look at somebody like Henrik Larsson who spent most of his career at Celtic winning trophies. Some people say he under achieved but I don’t see that at all, especially when you look at the club he went on to, Barcelona.

“Remember at Celtic you are playing in front of 60,000 people in every home match. It’s a special club.”

While Rogic is some way off being put in the same category as a legend like Larsson, it could certainly be argued that he has the talent and potential to help Celtic re-establish themselves on the European stage, which is surely essential if the club hope to keep their best players.

But with Brendan Rodgers seemingly compiling a squad consisting of a number of extremely gifted players, including Rogic, it is surely not out of the question to suggest that they can make the kind of impact on the continent that gives them a greater chance of keeping their developing squad together.
