Tom Lees has issued a message to Sheffield Wednesday supporters – nine days after their 4-2 derby defeat against Sheffield United.

Captain Glenn Loovens, who wasn’t involved in the game last Sunday, is the only Wednesday player to have been interviewed by the local media before Lees, as head coach Carlos Carvalhal sought to deflect any criticism onto himself.

But speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield on Tuesday, Lees vowed that he and his teammates ‘will take the feeling with us moving forward’.

“We understand what the game meant and we understand the importance of it,” the centre-back said. “We were all bitterly disappointed and the feeling afterwards, even a week after, it still hasn’t gone away.

“We remember the taste that we left the ground with, it wasn’t nice at all. We know exactly how the fans will have been feeling, because we had to endure it as much as them after the game, seeing the other side win. It was a very, very hard pill to swallow to be honest.

“We were very disappointed. We know that we can’t change what happened in that game, we can’t change the score, we can’t change the performance, and we know that winning the next game (a 1-0 defeat at lowly Birmingham City), winning the Leeds game wasn’t going to change it.

“But that was the only thing that we could affect, after it happened. We could only go and win the next game. We tried our best at Birmingham to do that, and I thought we were unlucky, and again (against) Leeds.

“We knew it wasn’t going to put anything right, but we did what we could to try and do the next best thing and we’ve got to take it with us moving forward, remember how we felt, and just keep it in the back of our minds.”

Wednesday go into the international break on a high, after beating Leeds 3-0 at Hillsborough on Sunday.

Thomas Christiansen’s team had been top of the Championship only five days beforehand, but were comfortably beaten by a much-improved Owls side, who could have six goals on another day.

In the end, Gary Hooper’s double and a superb strike from Kieran Lee were enough for the hosts, and enabled them to climb back into the top half of the table – albeit five points and nine places behind Sheffield United.
