Leeds United beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 on Saturday evening.
Leeds United moved another step closer to promotion on Saturday evening, beating Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 at Elland Road.
The Whites had seen Sheffield United squander a 1-0 home win against Millwall by conceding a last-gasp equaliser, meaning Leeds could go three points clear of the Blades with a win.
United were relying on bitter city enemies Wednesday to do them a favour, but they were dominated by Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds in a one-sided game.
It may not look quite so dominant given that the score was just 1-0, but Leeds had 61% of possession, 28 shots on goal and six on target, swarming over the Owls throughout.
It looked like Leeds may be frustrated as the game hit the hour mark, but Jack Harrison popped up with the all-important winner, sending Leeds three points clear of Sheffield United.
Bielsa’s men are in the driving seat to win automatic promotion, and last night’s win – coupled with United’s defeat – means the Whites are the home stretch now.
After the game, Wednesday defender Tom Lees – formerly of Leeds – spoke to the Sheffield Star, and admitted that he thought the Elland Road atmosphere was ‘brilliant’.
Lees added that it was a shame the game was so one-sided, admitting his disappointment that Wednesday couldn’t step up, and hopes the Owls can be better in big games next season.
“The atmosphere was brilliant,” said Lees. “It was just a shame that the game was just so one sided really. But these are the big games you want to play in and hopefully next season we can be the dominant team in these sorts of games rather than hanging on for pretty much 90 minutes,” he added.
