Signing a new contract does not necessarily mean that a player will not leave, but Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney’s post on Twitter suggests that he will not, and it will be a blow for Newcastle United.

The Northern Echo recently reported of Newcastle’s long-standing interest in the 28-year-old midfielder.

The report claimed that a swap deal including striker Dwight Gayle – currently on loan at West Bromwich Albion from Newcastle in the Championship – could take place between the Cottagers and the Magpies.

However, today’s development seems to suggest that Newcastle will not be able to bring the 28-year-old midfielder.

The Scotland international midfielder has signed a new five-year contract with the Cottagers which will see him stay at Craven Cottage until 2014.

The midfielder – who will continue to earn £60,000 per week as salary, according to The Daily Mail – has expressed his delight at signing a new deal on Twitter, and has suggested that he has “unfinished business” at Fulham.

Newcastle will have to wait until January 2020 before attempting to bring Cairney to St. James’ Park, but the Scotland international seems determined to guide Fulham back to the Premier League from the Championship.
